America: appealing to the “Supreme Judge of the World”

Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson discuss a draft of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, in a painting by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris, from about 1932. Image: Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.

Jefferson started the Declaration by asserting that everyone has natural rights and that it's the government's job to protect them.

The Declaration of Independence boils down to three core ideas:

  1. God created everyone equal and gave us the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

  2. The government's main role is to safeguard these rights.

  3. If the government fails to do this, the people have the right to revolt and establish a new one.

Use these excerpts from the Declaration to help shape prayer language:

We hold these TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT, that all men are created equal …

They are endowed by their Creator with certain UNALIENABLE RIGHTS …

That TO SECURE THESE RIGHTS, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the CONSENT OF THE GOVERENED …

APPEALING TO THE SUPREME JUDGE of the world for the rectitude of our intentions ...

For the support of this Declaration, with a FIRM RELIANCE ON THE PROTECTION OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE …

Excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, 1776

Now, let’s focus and agree in prayer. Welcome the Holy Spirit to work through you, giving energy and life to your prayer. If you have opportunity, pray with others over the phone, on the web, or in person. But don’t underestimate the power of the private prayer room that Jesus spoke of — he promised public reward.

Let’s bring prayer firepower to these points throughout July and the summer!

🙏 Heavenly Father, we praise you that truth is “self-evident” and shines through nature, history, and the human conscience. You made us all equal, in your image. Give us revelation and understanding.

🙏 God, thank You for unalienable rights that come from You alone, not from people or governments. They’re ours forever. Empower us to steward them well.

🙏 Father, we recognize that government is Your idea, meant to protect the rights You’ve given us. Help Americans understand that our government is based on the consent of the people. Help us to be upright, strong, engaged.

🙏 With America’s founders, we appeal to heaven, to the “Supreme Judge of the World.” Guide and strengthen our intentions as a people. Give us your success.

🙏 We rely on Your guidance, strength, and providence. We trust You completely and draw our strength from You. You are sovereign over all nations.

Amen — Father, we believe in our heart that we have received, and we count it done. We are grateful for your works in America.
